The assault vest, sometimes known as the "invasion vest," was a short-lived product, created specifically for the Normandy operation. The U.S. Army had experimented with different versions of this equipment, inspired by British commando vests, in late 1943. One model was accepted and production began in early 1944, to be ready for the invasion.
In May 1944, limited quantities were issued to troops in the 1st, 4th, and 29th Infantry Divisions, as well as the 2nd Ranger Battalion.
