In order for an Army of Occupation Medal to be awarded, a service member must have performed at least thirty consecutive days of military service within the designated geographic area of military occupation.

In addition to the German bar, for those service members who participated in 92 consecutive days of military service during the Berlin Airlift between the years 1948 and 1949, the Berlin Airlift Badge is authorized as a badge for the Army Medal. Of occupation
